- That the gas appliances are on the correct setting and are burning properly using the right operating pressure
- That harmful gasses such as carbon monoxide are safely removed from the appliance to the exterior of the home
- That ventilation passages are not blocked and working properly
- That safety devices and alarms are properly operating
What appliances need gas safety checks?

When should gas safety checks be done?
Gas safety checks will identify any problems that need immediate repair. They must be done at least once every year or every 12 months. It is a good idea to schedule this during the summer months, that way you can avoid dealing with broken appliances that you need during the cold months. It usually takes about an hour to complete, and you have the choice whether you wish to stay in the house or not during the check.
If you live in an apartment, your landlord must get it done for you. Read more about the gas safety information for tenants and landlords to be informed about your rights as tenants and / or responsibilities as landlord.
Some gas companies offer doing the gas safety check and the service (such as a boiler service) in the same visit. This can save you time and money.
What is the difference between a gas safety check and a gas service?
A gas safety check will simply asses if the appliances are safe to operate. On the other hand a full service will include a complete check of the appliance, where the engineer will probably take the appliance apart to do a full inspection. The service will also include assessing the appliance’s physical condition, pipework, air vents and flues for any problems or deterioration. Performance tests will be run and remedial actions will be taken if necessary.
Gas appliances should be serviced according to the specifications from the manufacturer. For most, this is annual.
While regular gas safety checks will ensure that your appliances are safe to operate, regular services will help maintain your appliances to avoid costly repairs and ensure efficiency.
