How To Heat Your Home For Free

Surely, you’ve read about advices on installing double glazing, professional insulation or upgrading the boiler and heating system. Yes, those are very effective ways to heat your homes, but they can also be very expensive. Here are some cheap ways to quickly keep your home warm.

How To Heat Your Home For Free

  • Use tin foil behind the radiator. This will prevent unnecessary loss of heat that can disappear through wall. The reflective aluminum bounces the hear back into the room. You can use kitchen foil, or buy ones that are specifically made for this purpose (and much more effective) for less than £10
  • Use thick curtains to keep the heat in. You can also opt to get curtains with thermal lining, which are generally inexpensive, to use during winter. You can also line your old curtains yourself by using cheap fleece or PVC shower curtains. Use curtains on your front door too to add a layer of protection. You can also use a good old thick rug and place it at the back of your door.
  • During the day, let the sunlight in and let it help heat your home. Pull open the window shades and curtains and close them at dusk to help heat your home for free.
  • Always be on the look out for mini draughts, like ones that can come through your letterbox, keyholes, and your pet flaps. You can use a type of brush on your letterbox, a keyhole cover slip, or pieces of blanket for your pet flap. Even a small draught can make your house colder so blocking it can make a huge difference.
  • Remove anything blocking your radiators such as large frontiers or curtains because those items will absorb the heat.
  • Put a shelf directly above the radiator – but not on the radiator itself – to stop the heat from rising directly above it. This will also help if the radiator is sitting below a window with curtains, where the heat can het trapped.
  • Close rooms that are unused so you don’t have to share the heat with a bigger, unused space.
  • Set timers on your heaters and boiler. This will help save energy while keeping the house warm.
