Keeping the temperature constantly on low heat can save you more that switching it on and off for large blows of heat. Learn and understand the timer settings of your heating system as this will help you better manage the temperature in your home and the energy used.
  • Layer your clothes to help you keep warm. Wear layers of jackets, sweaters and scarves, as well as socks and slippers at home. Use an extra blanket at night. This will help you keep warm and you would not need to turn the heating up.
  • Set your timer so that your heating system is set and turns on 15 to 30 minutes before you come home. Turn it off 30 minutes before you leave your home.
  • Get your home insulated. Install loft and cavity wall insulation. Loft insulation can save you up to £140 and cavity  wall insulation can save you up to £160 every year on you energy usage. The government now provides full and partial grants to help homeowners pay for home insulation. But even if you don’t receive the grant from the government, insulation is still a great investment and is worth the money in the long run.
  • Install solar panels. This can help you save as much as one-thirds on your energy use. The government has also launched the Feed-In Tariff scheme so that panel installers actually get paid for the energy the panels generate.
  • Use storage heaters efficiently. The input should be constant at the amount that you need, and the output should be at the minimum when you don’t need heating. It would also be ideal to turn it off at the wall when not needed or not in use.
  • Buy an energy efficient boiler, as well as energy efficient appliances for your home. An A graded boiler is 90% more efficient than old boilers. Lots of brands now offer green friendly and highly efficient lines of appliances. Read the labels before buying and do your research.
  • Choose the appropriate tariff for you. Compare prices between gas and electric companies. Inquire about other tariffs such as Economy 7 and Economy 10 and decide if these would be a better option for you and will help save you money.
  • Apply for an energy grant. The government offers a variety of grants to residential homes to help with the costs if home improvements that can help with energy saving.
