Make the most of the sun and save on your energy bills in the summer months.
Summer Tips: How to save money and energy
- Use efficient air conditioning systems. Just like you want to use efficient boilers in the winter, you want to use efficient air conditioning units in the summer as well. Use timers and sensors so that you can set when the AC will be turned on and off. Keep windows and doors closed to keep the cool air in and the hot air out.
- Turn off your boiler. With off your central heating and / or your boiler altogether if you don’t need it in the hot months. Read more about whether you should turn off your boiler in the summer.
- Turn off vending machines and refrigerators that are not in use, like during weekends in the office.
- Maximize the sunlight. Turn off the lights when not needed and if it is bright enough in the room using natural light. Use efficient or energy saving light bulbs and / or add sensors and timers to make sure they are switched off when not needed.
- Go fresh in the kitchen. Consider going healthy and fresh and forgo the frying or baking and make more salads for the family. If you do wish to warm food, use your microwave – its the most efficient way to do this.
- If you have a full load of dirty dishes, it is more efficient to wash them in the dishwasher (full load) than by hand. Then, let the dishes air dry.
- Fit an eco shower head, and you can save about £75 by reducing your water use without much change in power. Ask your water company if they offer free ones. On really hot days, try taking a cold shower! You may find it really refreshing and save some money on your heating and water bills.
- Insulate your home. Insulation will work for you both during the winter, by keeping the heat in, and in the summer, by keeping the heat out. Invest in good, high quality insulation, a this is something that you can use year- round.
- Get everybody involved. Educate your family on the steps that you’re taking to cut down energy costs so that everyone can pitch in, and switch the lights off as an initiative if someone forgot to turn them off.
