Energy Myths

Have you ever heard any of these energy myths?

It seems like everyone these days is trying to save money by cutting down on expenses. One of the biggest expenses most households have is their energy bill. And whether it is summer or winter, a comfortable temperature inside your home is simply not something you are willing to compromise. Certainly, someone has given you tips on how you can save on your energy bill. While the intention is good, not all of these “tips” are accurate.

Let’s bust some of these energy myths:

  1. Leaving your heating on low setting all day is cheaper than turning it off. – This is the most popular of the energy myths. However, according to the Energy Saving Trust, doing this actually costs you a large amount of energy. Instead, program your heating system to turn on before you arrive home – for example, set the timer to turn on 30 minutes before you arrive from work. This will get the house warm enough by the time you arrive but you will not be wasting as much energy as if you would leave the heating on all day. If your boiler is old and does not allow for you to set the timer early, consider getting a new boiler installation.
  2. Running appliances at night is cheaper than doing it in the day. – This is only true for Economy 7 tariff users. But if you are on normal tariff, the rate will be the same regardless of what time you use your appliances.
  3. Boiler services are a waste of money – Many households in the UK actually do not get an annual boiler service because they consider it an unnecessary expense. This was revealed in a 2013 research done by uSwitch. The study found that 1 to 10 homes in the UK do not get a regular boiler service done. Getting a regular gas boiler service is important because during the service, the engineer will check everything to make sure that the boiler is in good working condition and clean filters, any part that is damaged will get replaced to avoid a breakdown and more repairs, and an emission test will be done to make sure there is no danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  4. It is okay to leave your laptop or phone plugged in after it is fully charged. – Some charger models do disconnect after the phone is fully charged. However, most continue to draw current. It is a good idea to always unplug the charger after you are done charging.
  5. Putting your appliances on stand by mode is cheaper than turning them off. – Some claim that turning appliances on and off can cause a surge of energy. This is not true. Switching your appliances off and / or pulling the plug off at the wall will actually save you up to £40 annually.
