Central Heating System

A central heating system is a system that provides heat or warmth all throughout the house. The whole system can be a combination of HVAC — heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

Combustion of fossil fuel with the use of a furnace or boiler is the most common method of generating heat. It is then is distributed through the different pipes through the ductwork. Either hot water or steam is circulated through the pipes. Some buildings now use solar-powered heat sources and in that case, water is used to distribute the heat.

Types of Central Heating System

There are three types of central heating system in the UK. They are:

Wet System Central Heating System: This refers to the system that use radiators. It is called a wet system because the heat is being delivered and circulated from the water that is flowing from the boiler to the radiator.

Warm Air System. This type of system is somewhat similar to an air conditioning unit where air is blown out through the vents. This is also referred to blow air heating. The air is heated by a gas burner and a thermostat and a time switch is used to control it.

Storage Heaters operate with the use of low cost electricity like Economy 7 and White Meter. Night storage heaters are used to keep the place warm.

Central heating systems with radiators are termed wet systems because the heat is delivered from water which flows from the boiler to the radiators.

Wet central heating system

Wet central heating systems may be fuelled by
  • Natural gas
  • LPG liquefied petroleum gas
  • Oil
  • Solid fuel
  • Electricity
There are two main categories
